In 2022, the RCA launched a new program to provide a space for individuals living with diverse abilities to explore the joys of music. Beyond the Music is led by Certified Music Therapists from Soul Sounds Music Therapy, a partner-owned music therapy business based in Kelowna focusing on holistic well-being and person-centered care.

This new program has been very successful. Beyond the Music brings in a room full of participants with varying abilities each week in an inclusive, welcoming environment to enjoy a therapeutic musical experience. Through singing, music-making, group songwriting, and movement, the participants build connections and gain confidence.

Soul Sounds Music Therapy’s founder, Kayla Turnbull, says this program truly does go beyond the music. “This group feels more like a family,” says Kayla. “It's been inspiring to witness the courage and growth of the participants throughout the program.” Kayla graduated from Capilano University with a Bachelor of Music Therapy Program. In her clinical practice, Kayla helps to provide a safe, supportive space for people of all backgrounds, and we were excited to have her and her team help in facilitating Beyond the Music. Kayla has found that music is the most effective means of breaking down barriers and fostering significant connections among participants.

“What I love most about facilitating this group is the kindness, creativity, and leadership initiated between participants. People will go out of their way to support and encourage others to feel included. The love in the Beyond the Music community is beautiful and contagious.”
From improved physical well-being to improved emotional well-being, the benefits of music therapy are substantial, especially for those with disabilities. We believe having accessible programming like Beyond the Music is incredibly important for our community. With programs like this, we can continue to offer unique creative outlets for individuals who truly need them.

“The music therapists at Soul Sounds Music Therapy strive to create an inclusive music group for people with disabilities. We encourage everyone to come as they are and feel the joy of making music together” says Kayla.

Beyond the Music is offered each Wednesday from May 10th - June 28th, 10-11 AM in the Salloum Rehearsal Hall at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. No musical experience is required! Single sessions are $10 per student. We welcome community partnerships. Pre-register here.
