September 16, 2021RCA invites the community to Kelowna Culture Days for its 4th Year showcasing more than 80 local artists: September 24 to October 24

September 24 marks the kick-off to the 12th annual Culture Days celebrations – four weeks of celebration raises the awareness, accessibility, participation, and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

For the fourth year in a row, the Rotary Centre for the Arts is the Kelowna Culture Days Hub, opening its space to arts and cultural presenters to share their work and knowledge with the community. In-person events range from dance performances to pottery and painting workshops, to music and kids programming. All activities are free to the public, with donations gratefully accepted and going to the presenting artists.

The RCA is also producing events for Kelowna Culture Days, including a Kick-Off Reception in the Atrium on Friday, September 24 at 5 pm, featuring words from MC and poet Rawle James, RCA Executive Director Colleen Fitzpatrick, and Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran; dance by Leona from Kelowna; music; and more!

The Downtown Kelowna Scavenger Hunt, sponsored by Downtown Kelowna, takes participants through the downtown core looking for art in businesses and gallery exhibitions, and for arts and cultural landmarks in public spaces. This is a family-friendly, accessible activity that participants can complete on their own time throughout all four weeks of Culture Days. To get started on the hunt, download the GooseChase app and enter the code PBE6PK, or pick up a paper copy at the RCA Box Office, any time between Friday, September 24 at noon and Sunday, October 24 at 4 pm. All completed entries on the app or paper entries returned to the RCA Box Office, before 4 pm on October 24 will be entered to win prize packs, valued between $60 $125 from generous vendors across Downtown Kelowna.

The Cultural District Roving Audience Experience, which the RCA has partnered with Tourism Kelowna to present, lets you explore the Cultural District while enjoying performances between 7-10 pm on Saturday, September 25. Follow the map (available at the RCA and Tourism Kelowna as of September 24) and make your way to all five performances, plus see some buskers and food stops along the way! Featuring 15-minute performances, every half hour by: Opera Kelowna Society, Evolve Arts Collective, Kinfolk Nation, Inspired Word Café, The Isadorables, and Jazz Duo Zach Griffin & Cole Smith, it’s six shows in one, for FREE! This event is sponsored by Downtown Kelowna with additional support from Festivals Kelowna and Peak Technologies.

The RCA’s online presentation is the Cultural Cuisine Web-Series, featuring locals preparing cultural dishes that you can cook along with. Incorporating story and cultural knowledge into the preparation, you can try a new dish while learning about the diverse cultural cuisine in the Central Okanagan. Featuring Mexican, Korean, Ukrainian, and Jamaican food, episodes will be released online each Friday in October (excluding October 29). Special thanks to our host Joe Otoo and videographer/editor Doug Brown.
