Chekhov's Shorts

Theatre Smith Gilmour
Adapted by Dean Gilmour & Michele Smith

(Thurs-Sat) February 23rd - 25th, 7:30 PM

Based on five bittersweet short stories by Anton Chekhov and adapted by Dean Gilmour and Michele Smith, Chekhov's On the Train provides the framework for this 90-minute one-act work. As the play opens, we see four passengers embark on a train voyage across Russia's frozen wastelands from Happy-Trach-Tarrach Station to the station known as Run-For-Your-Life. The passengers are a wonderful array of characters and slowly, their stories are revealed, hidden within each other like matrioshkas.

Chekhov's shorts was described as "An intense experience you won't soon forget." by the Montreal Gazette and has played to sold-out audiences and won three Dora Mavor Moore Awards. more

This was announced Jan 26th by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, at the Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna.

"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in organizations that help define our culture and promote our identity," said Minister Moore. "By supporting these organizations, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and create jobs and growth throughout British Columbia."

Funding will support 11 projects throughout the province, including the Intercultural Society of the Central Okanagan, the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society, the Chamber Music Kelowna Society and Kelowna Visual & Performing Arts Centre Society.

The Kelowna Visual and Performing Arts Centre Society received funding under the Canada Arts Presentation Fund for our 2012-13 & 2013-14 seasons. This support from the Government of Canada enhances the cultural life of the community.

The board and staff are grateful to receive this funding which allow us to continue our work,  presenting the finest in touring Canadian artists and exposure to these artists through our outreach programs.

February Art Exhibits

Angela Bonten is known for her expressive and diverse style. "Being an artist defines who I am." says Angela. "The creative process is the essence of my life from viewing, studying and creating the work. I do not adhere to one particular style but alternate depending on the subject matter and my mood. I generally work in series and keep exploring an idea. I am spontaneous when I work. I love to respond to the accidents of the paint and try not to have..." more

Bonnie Anderson - well known artist and owner of Potters Addict Ceramic Art Centre, Bonnie studied at the University of Calgary where she majored in painting, printmaking and ceramics. Using a variety of media including watercolour, oil, gouache, and acrylic, she creates striking pieces that showcase her extensive knowledge of painting techniques. "It is great having more than one medium to occupy the mind and body" says Bonnie. "When I find myself at a low period in one medium, switching to another medium can be inspiring and uplifting..." more

Christina Leinemann Knittel - Since receiving her BFA at the University of British Columbia in 2006, she has "lived and breathed the paint" at Opus, created art and become involved in the Okanagan arts community. Christina has developed a style that reflects her fun and quirky sensibility, creating artwork that brings a smile to those who view it. Christina says of her current exhibition, The Tops of Trees. "The tree tops are reserved for the free spirit, the dreamer and the adventure seeker. When we are below the trees one cannot help looking up, and in doing so, hope surfaces, awakening our imagination to what could be. Far off places, childhood dreams..." more

Darrel Giesbrecht - A resident of Lake Country, BC, Darrel looks for every opportunity to capture, or "be captured" by the Okanagan Valley's unique landscape and images. It may be a surprise to learn that his goal as a photographer is not just to take a pretty picture. In Darrel's words, "I'm not a great believer in art strictly for art's sake. More importantly, my passion is to point the observer, perhaps invite the observer in some ways, to a personal "sacred" place - a place that evokes a sense of wonder and the awareness of a reality that is much bigger than ourselves, a reality rooted still in the wild and rarely touched regions of subconscious memory. I coincide with Marcel Proust's observation that "the real voyage of discovery consists not of seeking new landscape but in seeing with new eyes..." more
