With the gardens in full bloom and the warmer weather finally here, the Rotary Centre for the Arts is hopping with events this May. Come in and experience everything from a sassy Girl's Night Out with EvelineCharles Salon & Spa, to a weekend out at the Wilden Art Promenade.

Having recently announced the new Sunshine Theatre Season, all of us are preparing for the fantastic new series of theatre performances coming to the Mary Irwin Theatre in 2009/2010. To find out more about what's happening this month at the RCA please read below...

Make it a Girl's Night Out at the RCA!

Event: Girls Night Out 2009 / Spring Beauty & Fashion Event
Date: Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 from 7-11pm

The Rotary Centre for the Arts is teaming up with EvelineCharles Salon & Spa to present an evening celebrating beauty and fashion. Held at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, the event features a presentation on spring fashion trends, beauty, and cosmetic dermatology procedures.

Guests will also have the opportunity to take part in one-on-one beauty consultations and learn how to create their own personal fashion-forward style while sipping bubbly, socializing, and indulging at the dessert bar!

So, round-up your favourite group of girls and don't miss this chance for an exciting evening out! Each ticket purchase includes:

Wilden Art Promenade & more at the RCA

Event: Wilden Art Promenade
Date: Saturday, May 2nd / Sunday, May 3rd, 2009
Times: Saturday & Sunday 1-5pm

Featuring a contemporary art exhibition & sale, artist demonstrations, a community barbeque and spectacular show home living, the Wilden Art Promenade is an exciting collaboration not to be missed!

The event is free to attend and those in attendance have the chance to win a fabulous door prize that includes a trip for two to Paris (valued at $3,000). We look forward to seeing you at the Wilden Art Promenade!

And don't forget... following the Wilden Art Promenade on Saturday, May 2nd, guests are invited to visit the RCA for an evening full of exciting events.

Highlights of the evening will include a free preshow performance by Closing Iris at 7pm in the Atrium, a concert featuring T.O.F.U. in the Mary Irwin Theatre at 8pm, and WAM! happening throughout the building from 9-11pm.


T.O.F.U. Workshop & Evening Concert


Fans of T.O.F.U. will not want to miss the opportunity to participate in the upcoming Workshop of 100 Words with poet and musician "Mighty" Mike McGee. Participants will focus on short poetry, and have the chance to perform, write and think outside the box!

The all-ages workshop will run from 3:30-5pm on May 2nd and is only $10 to attend. This is a fantastic way for participants to experiment with their own voice in a fun, interactive setting.

Following the workshop, T.O.F.U. will perform in the Mary Irwin Theatre at 8pm. With heavy influences pulled from hip hop, rock, folk music and spoken word, T.O.F.U.'s unique blend of "political with comic edge" is both thought-provoking and entertaining. *Please be advised, show contains adult content.

Celebrate Wine, Art & Music at WAM!


Finish off this year's Okanagan Spring Wine Festival with WAM! on Saturday, May 2nd from 9-11pm.

Featuring live music, fabulous artwork and a vibrant atmosphere, WAM! is the only FREE late-night event following wine fest.

Guests can enjoy a fantastic live performance by the Michael Garding Group featuring Candice Deacoff, visit participating artist studios and meet local artists in person.

Tasty treats, specialty drinks, local wine and delicious artisan gelato will be available for purchase during the event at Staccatos Bistro.

Tambura Rasa heats things up at the RCA

Event: Tambura Rasa
Date: Thursday, May 28th, 2009 at 5:30pm
Venue: South Atrium, Rotary Centre for the Arts
Price: $20 per adult / $10 per student

Tambura Rasa takes audiences on a musical journey; from sensual rhythms and dance of the Middle East, to upbeat sounds of West Africa and joyous dance music of the Balkans, Tambura Rasa offers a multicultural fusion of contemporary grooves and traditional rhythms.

Formed in 2004 by guitarist Ivan Tucakov, Tambura Rasa has made a name for itself by playing its signature blend of Gypsy Violin, Flamenco Guitar, Balkan Rhythms and Afro-Cuban Percussion.

Complete with Flamenco and Belly Dancers, Tambura Rasa is a must see for music lovers and dance audiences alike! Guests are invited to stick around following the concert for our regular Salsa Thursday event starting at 8pm in the Atrium.

This month in the Galleria...

Various Works by Peter Volker Schenk & Guests
May 1st - 31st, 2009


Born in Southern Bavaria, Peter Volker Schenk was first introduced to photography as a young boy. Now retired and living in Kelowna, Peter finds inspiration from the beautiful colours and landscapes found in the Okanagan.

An opening reception to celebrate the Peter's exhibition will be held on Saturday, May 2nd from 4:30-8:30pm. The artist will be in attendance and everyone is welcome to attend!

Highlights of the opening include:

This month in the Atrium & Mezzanine...

Doors of Perception
May 1st-31st, 2009
Opening: May 2nd, 2009 at 7pm

Doors of Perception features a selection of painted doors and other works created by the painting group heART FIT.

Since February 14, 2008 an enthusiastic group of painters has been gathering at the Rotary Centre for the Arts to release and explore their creative energy through "spontaneous process painting".

Each work is allowed to evolve as a creative event which explores the mysteries of the unconscious mind. heART FIT classes encourage ArtsCare and an understanding that: Everyone has the urge to create.

Following the opening on May 2nd at 8pm, the group will be having a small auction of audience selected works. Proceeds will be used to purchase free supplies for those wishing to try out a heART FIT experience.

Also on display in May... Various works by Janice Fingado & The Ponderosa Spinners, Weavers & Fibre Arts in the Display Cases.


Notice of KVPACS Annual General Meeting

Kelowna Visual & Performing Arts Centre Society has changed the year end from December 31, 2008 to June 30, 2009. Due to the change, an Annual General Meeting will be held at 5pm on June 16, 2009 followed by a short three-month term until the next AGM, scheduled for September.

The June AGM will include a presentation of the annual audited financial statement and five directors entering the second year of a two-year term (Lori Field, Ken Ihas, Sue Goodwin, Tyler Neels and Grace Young). In addition, the board will be presenting a slate of three directors to be nominated for a two-year term (Ross Dumontet, Neil Cadger and Jennifer Hindle). Members may be elected for nomination from the floor.

Should your KVPACS membership be expired, you may renew it up to and including the time of the AGM. Non-members will not be permitted to attend the meeting. We look forward to seeing you at the AGM.


Evergreen Art Gallery... Call for Artists

The Rotary Centre for the Arts is calling artists of all mediums for submissions to the Evergreen Art Gallery. Please note this is a juried exhibition. Artists are welcome to submit up to 5 works for consideration. All artworks submitted must include a gallery appraisal, which will accompany the artwork when it is sold. There is no fee to enter.

Artists are asked to consider the theme of music, the arts, and celebration in the creation/submission of their works. While all price points are encouraged and dependant upon the artist, the Rotary Centre for the Arts would like to ask artists to consider submitting works between $300 and $800.

Artwork will be available for purchase from September 1st to November 20th, 2009 and on display from November 9th-19th, 2009 in the Upper Lobby at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. For work that is sold, donating artists will receive 50% of the total funds received, as well as a tax receipt for the balance.

Previous to the event all donated work will receive excellent media and web exposure. The exhibition will also be featured in the Homes for the Holidays Brochure and artists will receive acknowledgement in a full-page thank you ad.

Evergreen is a premier annual fundraiser event held at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Proceeds raised at Evergreen are committed to funding RCA Youth Arts Education Programs. Sunshine Theatre Announces New Season!

Sunshine Theatre is pleased to announce the launch of the new 2009/2010 Sunshine Theatre Season. Sunshine will be presenting four fantastic touring performances suitable for everyone!

This year, Early Bird subscriptions are being offered at a lower, more affordable rate. At only $90 per adult and $40 per student, subscribers will not want to miss their opportunity to secure great seats at a very affordable price.

Early Bird Subscriptions will be available for purchase through April 1st - June 30th with single tickets on sale after November 1st, 2009.

Sunshine Theatre is also offering two free subscriptions for those who purchase ten or more subscriptions, and for sponsor donations of $500 (charitable tax receipt included).
