Inspiring Creativity in Education
August 29 & 30,
2006
Conference Location
– The Rotary Centre for the Arts and The Kelowna Art Gallery
The Rotary Centre for the Arts in
Kelowna B.C. will be hosting an Arts Educator’s Conference August
29-30, 2006. Designed to inspire teachers of drama, music, visual
arts, media and dance at the start of a new school year, the
conference will feature guest speakers and a variety of workshops in
all aspects of Arts Education. We will celebrate the ways in which
the learner and community intertwine and support one another
expressively. This conference is open to all Arts teachers in the
Province, and will focus on Advocacy and Professional Development
for Elementary and Secondary School teachers and Administrators.
“The arts must be at the heart of
every child’s experience if they are to have a chance to dream and
to create, to have beliefs, and to carry a sense of cultural
identity”
James D. Wolfensohn,
former chairman of The Kennedy Centre
Join us in
Kelowna’s beautiful Cultural District August 29-30

Keynotes
August
29 Dr.
Stuart Richmond
“The
Arts, Community and the Authentic Learner”
Overview:
The Arts are forms of understanding that develop mind, feeling,
imagination, and touch, and thus are very powerful emotionally. They
involve aesthetics, and can be practiced for their own sakes, which
teaches us about intrinsic value, but also, as with the development
of appreciation for the environment they can have significant social
and community response.
Stuart
Richmond is Professor and Coordinator of Arts Education at
Simon
Fraser
University
. He was founding Dean of the School of Creative Arts, Sciences and
Technology at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, Director of the
Simon Fraser Gallery, and Editor of the Canadian
Review of Art Education. He
has published in the leading international journals of arts
education, and he taught for several years in the public schools of
Alberta
and BC. In 2003 was appointed Visiting Professor at the Tianjin
Academy of Fine Art, China. His exhibition, “Medieval Places:
Recent Photographs of French Romanesque Architecture” was held at
Alliance Francaise in
Vancouver
in May, 2006.
